Shame and pride: how negative messages from society about gender identity and sexual orientation can lead to LGBTQ+ people relating to themselves with criticism and harshness.
A compassionate mindful approach can help to adopt kinder ways of talking to themselves.

The care we want
Make Space, in conjunction with Max from It's All About You Wellbeing, hosted a peer support space for LGBTQ+ people with experience of self-harm. It enabled discussion, reflection and responses fostering care, empathy, and openness.

with guest speaker Bridget Garrood, Consultant Solicitor, outlined points of law and legal processes including name and document changes, Gender Recognition Certificate, Gender Recognition Act 2004, Equality Act 2010 and Family law.
Max discussed best practice in supporting trans+ employees at work and what trans+ people can do to look after their wellbeing during if they choose to transition

"Working well with LGBTQ+ clients"
CPD for counsellors & wellbeing practitioners
2 day CPD course for counsellors and wellbeing practitioners. We looked at ‘coming out’, intersecting issues, working with family members and partners and talking about sex and sexuality - the first day focused on gender identity and the second on sexual orientation
The content was presented in a number of ways, through presentations, pairs work, video, brief experiential exercises, individual reflection, group discussions and anonymised case studies.

Trans awareness session

Facilitated by Max and Al Head, co-creator of Queer Spirit Festival and author of 'Queer Deity, Sacred Slut’. We delivered a bespoke trans+ awareness session which covered the topics of Myths and Ancient Practices,, Ritual Transformations and the British cultural and historic context of gender identity. We also discussed the different elements of gender transition and current issues affecting trans and non-binary people.
